About Birmingham Citadel Band
Birmingham Citadel Band is made up of around 48 Salvationist musicians. None of its members are full time officers of the Salvation Army; in fact there are a wide variety of occupations represented. These include students, teachers, tradesmen, salesmen and managers each of whom are deeply committed to proclaiming the message of the Christian gospel through the ministry of music.
The band is always in great demand and has a busy schedule of outdoor meetings, festivals or concerts, visits to hospitals and homes for the elderly, together with its day to day work within the Salvation Army at Birmingham Citadel. Milestones in the band's recent history include broadcasts, recordings and a number of overseas tours throughout Europe and to the USA.
In May 2000 they were honoured by being invited to participate in the 'Congress 2000' - a great meeting for Salvationists from the southern part of the UK - held in the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. A selection of photographs is shown below.
One particular highlight in the band's annual schedule is its involvement with Sir Cliff Richard's Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament. This is held during the month of December in the UK's National Indoor Arena. In addition to presenting solo items, the band is responsible for accompanying Sir Cliff, and the 10,000 strong 'congregation' in the singing of Christmas carols.
