Influenced by the Army Mother, Catherine Bannister, a lady of culture, became a Salvationist in 1887. In the following year she entered The Army's Missionary Field in India, where, for twenty two years, she continued a brave and triumphant fight.

She pioneered and developed Army operations in the Marathi country, and later had an important charge on the Punjab. The Colonel entered immediately into the life and habits of the people, and was possessed of quite a remarkable facility in acquiring languages.

She 'died at her post' whilst engaged on the translation of Army songs for her beloved Marathis.
