The Songsters

The Cradley Heath Songsters' style of music ministry is exciting, and we design our progarmmes to be lively and thought-provoking. Our music has brought joy and spiritual enrichment to many people who have heard us.

The Salvation Army, Cradley Heath is a church who proclaim the message of Jesus Christ through faith, word and deed. The Cradley Heath Songsters come from many different backgrounds, and unite to serve and worship God in their church, The Salvation Army. We have teachers, care workers, factory workers, office workers, professionals and preachers.

Under the leadership of Rob Westwood-Payne, the songsters put their faith into action, as do Salvationists around the world, by demonstrating God’s love for man through meeting physical and spiritual needs.

Whether singing in concerts in local civic halls or during special weekends at other Salvation Army centres, in a care centre or nursing home or at home on a Sunday at church, the songsters proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ through musical praise and worship.

The Songster Leader

Rob Westwood-Payne grew up in The Salvation Army at Norwich Citadel. He left Norwich to study at the University of Warwick and became fully involved in the music centre there culminating in his conducting Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue to a full house in Symphony Hall in Birmingham. He also transferred to The Salvation Army at Coventry City, where he became Songster Leader at the age of 21. He was made Songster Leader at Cradley Heath in April 1998 shortly before marrying Gail in the following October.

He was commissioned Bandmaster of the Cradley Heath Band of The Salvation Army in January 2006. He is also West Midlands Divisional Youth Chorus Leader and Assistant Programme Director at the West Midlands Divisional Summer School for The Salvation Army. He is a member of the Salvation Army's Divisional Advisory Council and past member of the Territorial Youth Advisory Council. He is an Associate Solicitor in the Licensing Team of a national practice based in the midlands.
