This programme communicates the "caring and sharing" mission of The Salvation Army. Its title symbolizes its thrust. As the heart is considered the core of human life, Heartbeat/Latido affirms the essence of life is found in God. In a conversational style that is cheerful, comforting, and compelling, the speaker engages the listener with topics common to everyday life.

After providing illustrations, related facts and sometimes humor to spark interest, he correlates the topic to a Christian truth, leaving the listener with something to ponder. Heartbeat was first produced and released in October 1996. The release of the program in Spanish along with the English began in October 2000. Today, Heartbeat/Latino is carried on stations representing over 10 percent of the entire radio market in the USA.

The program is replicated and distributed by Project 70 Audio Services, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia. The program is digitally mastered, replicated on CD and distributed in series of programs for random broadcast as public service announcements; each CD contains 40 English programs and 25 in Spanish.

Heartbeat has displayed steady growth and popularity since it was first broadcast in September 1996. The speaker is Major Vern Jewett, divisional commander of the North & South Carolina Division of The Salvation Army. On each 1 minute program he offers inspirational insights into real life situations. The program is currently heard on over 1,100 radio stations in the USA, over ten percent of the broadcast market.

Latido is the Spanish version of Heartbeat. First broadcast in 2000, the speaker on the program is Captain Alejandro Castillo, divisional secretary for the National Capital and Virginia Division of The Salvation Army. Captain Castillo's deep commitment to his faith and to the program is evident in his heartfelt delivery at the microphone.
