Corps History
In 1881 "The War Cry" reported the opening of a new Salvation Army Barracks in Portland Street. Some "Skirmishers" had done some evangelical preparation in the City but now Captain Martha Whitehead was to lead a group of "Regulars" who would consolidate the work. The rain came down in torrents but there was a Grand March led by Brother Ward from Nottingham with his Hallelujah wife.
On Sunday morning after a meeting attended by 170 people there was another march led by Brother Moody and the Welsh Prince with his fiddle, to a great open air meeting where Brother Broadberry the converted navvy addressed the crowd. Further marches followed watched by thousands as Welsh Tom wearing a crimson hat and playing an out of tune cornet led the crowd back to the barracks which quickly filled leaving hundreds outside. By 1912 the Salvation Army was well established in the City and the new Citadel on the High Street opened by C.H. Roberts. Esq.MD. Three hundred people sat down to a celebratory tea.
The Salvation Army continued to play an important part in the life of the City and has hosted visiting bands and Songster Brigades from all over the world. A special highlight in the Corps History is The Salvation Army Centenary Thanksgiving Service at the Cathedral in July 1965. The procession up Lindum Hill included Bands, Choirs and Young peoples' sections from all over Lincolshire and beyond and made a most impressive witness.
Like other Corps Lincoln Citadel has fluctuations in its membership but a faithful neucleus throughout the years enables us to make a worthwhile contibution to Christian witness.
