Honouring the parents/guardians of Salvation Army officers

The Order of the Silver Star was instituted to honour mothers whose sons or daughters became officers of the Salvation Army. Inaugurated in the United States of America in 1930 the Order was established worldwide in January 1936. The order has since been extended to include any two individuals nominated by the cadet as being their parents.

For each son or daughter serving as an officer in the Salvation Army the mother or father is entitled to wear a small silver star on a blue enamelled shield. Parents whose officer children number more than four receive a specially designed badge bearing a star for each child.

Should a mother or father survive a son or a daughter promoted to Glory while holding a commission of officership, she is presented with a silver star set in a background of gold to replace the surrendered star.
