About The Association
The Salvation Army Housing Association was originally established in 1959 for the purpose of providing accommodation for retired Salvation Army officers. With the introduction of the 1974 Housing Act and the availability of capital grants, SAHA concentrated upon the provision of housing for single people within a supported setting. Our principal partner is the Salvation Army.
There are now more than forty residential centres that have principally been provided as a result of our partnership with The Salvation Army. SAHA provides new development and a quality assurance monitoring service, while The Salvation Army is contracted by SAHA to provide support services in our residential centres.
SAHA has also developed foyers and directly managed supported and general needs housing. The Association’s turnover is £31m, of which £26m relates to work with The Salvation Army in respect of residential centres.
The recent appointment of a new Chief Executive has led to a focus upon performance, continuous improvement, diversity and joint corporate working between departments.
The general needs housing stock is served principally by a Customer Service Centre in Bolton. This provides a day-to-day maintenance service for residents with elements of routine housing management. An area office is provided at Bolton with management bases in Nottingham, Swindon and Brentwood. The Customer Service Centre was established as a result of a Best Value review during which resident feedback indicated that the vast majority of residents contact the Association by telephone. A resident survey was undertaken in 2002 and customer telephone feedback is sought in respect of ongoing services.
SAHA’s main aim is to provide accommodation for single people with appropriate levels of support and is a specialist in the development of supported housing. Currently the Association’s development strategy focuses on providing temporary supported housing managed primarily by other managing agents, with a target of providing 700 homes over the next five years. The Association works closely with a number of local authorities and Housing Corporation regions, meeting their demands for supported housing developments.
