The Salvation Army has had a presence in St. Helier since 1879, which is just 14 years after the Army was founded.
‘The new building will mean nothing until it is crowned with the sacrificial offering of souls for God,’ declared Chief of the Staff Commissioner Israel L. Gaither. He was speaking at St Helier Corps on the Channel Island of Jersey, UK, which was reopening its hall after extensive refurbishment work. A number of people knelt at the mercy seat in rededication at the end of the meeting.
The Chief’s message was the conclusion of the combined reopening and 125th corps anniversary celebrations in which Commissioner Eva D. Gaither and Bromley Songsters also participated.
A dramatic opening ceremony in front of a large crowd included an unexpected water bomb attack. Two youths threw the water bombs from an adjacent multi-storey car park, just missing the Chief, who continued unperturbed and reflected on early-day Salvationists who faced similar resistance. He then urged the corps not to ‘stand still and look back, but move forward and take action to extend the ministry on the island’.
The Bailiff of Jersey (Sir Philip Bailhache) praised the Army for its work on the island. He particularly thanked the movement for its work with less fortunate people in society and for its music ministry.
Ninety-one-year-old Annie Payne, number one on the corps roll, assisted the Chief in cutting the ribbon to reopen the building, before people were invited to tour the premises.
Throughout the renovations the original corps façade remained untouched as it is a listed building. However, a number of internal alterations were made, such as the removal of an apartment and the platform, the construction of multi-purpose rooms and a facelift for the charity shop. The £600,000 refurbishment was made possible by corps funds, legacies and donations from around the island.

The Corps Today
St Helier Corps is the most southerly corps in the UK Territory and is located in the main town adjacent to the Minden Street multi-storey car park. This car park is free during the evenings and weekends. It is the only Corps on the Island of Jersey and gives a warm welcome to all, visitors and local people alike.
We would welcome you to worship with us on a Sunday. Unless other wise announced meetings are led by our Commanding Officers, Majors Ian and Irene Kerrison.
Sunday morning 10:30AM Sunday evening 6:00PM
Our Morning Meeting Commences at 10:30am On the 1st Sunday of the Month the meeting will take the form of a 'Family Service'
The photograph to the left was taken on Harvest Sunday morning 2006 and shows the newly formed Timbrel Group led by Songster Grace Guy taking part for the first time.
The meeting is bright and friendly and is aimed at all, young and old alike. During the summer months we welcome many visitors to our meetings and if you are spending some time over the weekend in Jersey we would be pleased to welcome you. The band will normally play before the commencement and will sometimes play a suitable piece of music during the meeting. The Songster Brigade will also contribute a musical item.
Our Commanding Officers will not only lead us in song and prayer but there will be time to listen when the Bible is read and be able to listen to a biblical message which will give you something to think again about as you leave.
The Young People are not forgotten. There is always a spot for them. They and their teachers will leave around 11:00am and make their way to one of our other halls for their own teaching. At the conclusion of the meeting we will all move from the Worship Hall to the Community Hall for tea, coffee, biscuits and further fellowship.
At 5:30pm you are invited to meet in the Quiet Room for a short period of prayer. We have a prayer book for you to put requests for prayer and we would ask that if you have a prayer request please let me know lennardrenouf@jerseymail.co.uk and I will make sure it is included.
The evening meeting commences at 6:00pm and is bright and friendly. Again, there will be musical contributions and one of the highlights of the meeting will be the testimony time were we can recall what God is doing in our lives and tell of blessings received during the past week.
Songs in both meetings are very varied from the good ole Army Songs found in The SA Song Book to the beautiful contemporary songs found in Graham Kendrick's The Source Song Book, Songs of Fellowship and the SA Happiness and Harmony. On the last Sunday of every month the meeting will be conducted in the form of a 'Songs of Praise'
If you are in Jersey over the Sunday, look us up. Our Citadel is in in Minden Street, St. Helier. You will receive a warm welcome and you can be assured of a blessing.
