Thomas Estill was born in Whitby in 1859 and met The Salvation Army during the famous campaign of Commissioner Elijah Cadman.

He became an officer in 1878 and after numerous corps and divisional appointments was sent to South Africa to lead the work in 1889.

He went on to lead The Salvation Army in Australia, New Zealand, and The Netherlands. In 1907 he was appointed to Japan, a nice link back to Cadman who had called Estill his "Rising Sun". After only a year in Tokyo he was sent to Chicago to lead the old USA Western Territory in 1908. His final appointment was in New York as Territorial Commander of USA Eastern Territory before his promotion to glory in October 1926.
